Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art, Painting

“I can see that in the midst of death, life persists. In the midst of untruth truth persists. In the midst of darkness, light persists. That whilst everything around me is ever changing, ever dying, there is underlying all that change a living power that is changeless, that holds all together.”
– Mahatma Gandhi

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

On Earth, there are an immeasurable number of places and people, none of them the same, and they were all created by the artist who gave me just a small amount of his creativity and skill. I constantly dream of faraway places, some I have visited and some I have not, hoping to one day visit them and experience his handiwork. My art is a way to capture moments of the beauty and joy which the Lord has sewn into the fabric of life on Earth.

In the same way that I dream of hundreds of places at once, I love to work in many artforms, never wanting to be tied down by a single medium or way of thinking about the art I am creating. Though the emphasis of my degree is in painting, I also have a partiality to printmaking, in its many forms, photography, and fibers. I love any artform which has a physical process: carving woodblocks, turning a printing press, developing film, running layers of fabric through my sewing machine, leaning into clay on a pottery wheel. My art is an extension of myself and the things I love, but it is also an act of praise, and I love to feel myself use my entire body as a part of the process.
