EMILY HEATH

"

My work has turned into a very illustrative style that has themes taken from the folklore, mythology, and stories I grew up reading. I work mainly in gouache, watercolor, and ink, which all help create these story driven paintings. I also often include a lot of detail and bright pops of metallic in my paintings, which I feel adds to the storytelling of the piece. When viewers see my paintings, I want them to be drawn to them and be reminded of the fairytales they grew up hearing about. I want them to be reminded of when they were children and believed those stories could be real. Another strong theme in my work is powerful women. A majority of my paintings are portraits, with many of the subjects being female. When viewers look at my portraits of women in strong armor carrying sharp swords, or women with battle scars and serious expressions, I want them to think on how strength and beauty need not be separate. Women can be strong individuals who fight, and I want to normalize that view through the portraits I paint.
